Before embracing the New Year, I tried to look back to see all the good things that happened in the past year. The year 2010 had been exciting and fruitful, especially when my family decided to have a Christmas vacation in our place in Davao City. Spending my entire Christmas vacation in my hometown was one of the happiest Christmas vacations I’ve had.
During my childhood years, this is the time where I met all my relatives and had a great time with my cousins and sisters. For some of us, time changed and we needed to move on to pursue our dreams and chase what lies ahead of us. Others, still unsure of what they want, got lost in the crowd trying to fit in and go with the flow.
Christmas is also the time where all the special dishes are prepared and shared with everyone. Eating has always been the most awaited part of any Christmas salu-salo. Noche Buena or “Good Night” refers to the night of Christmas Eve.This is a very special night for Filipinos because this is the time where family and very close friends come by and enjoy a very special Christmas dinner. Fried chicken, homemade ham,and orange chicken are just some of the all time favourites traditionally seen at our table. We also had a funny competition during the noche Buena wherein the male members of our family had to act like gay guys, making my noche Buena more memorable.
But Christmas is not just about having lots of food on our table but having the family to share it with, not on how much we had but on how much we gave, and not just the material things we possess but on the love we showed. Most of all Christmas is here to remind us all that Christ was born to free us from the captivity of sin.
